Yamaguchi Renzan
Shakuhachi

Born in Kaminoyama, Yamagata Prefecture, Yamaguchi Renzan studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Takahashi Kinzan and Ishigaki Seizan I. He passed the NHK Hōgaku Auditions in 1988 and 1994; won the bronze medal at the Tozan-ryū Honkyoku Competition in 1993; wrote the score for Japanese instruments and provided performance guidance for "Landscape with Japanese Instruments" (composed by Satō Toshinao and Miyoshi Akira, commissioned by the Yamagata Sankyoku Association), which was premiered at the "Festival of Japanese Music" at the 18th National Culture Festival Yamagata 2003; began the "Yamaguchi Renzan Shakuhachi Salon Concerts" in 2006, and has held 17 such concerts to date; appeared on "S-Live" on SMAP x SMAP (Fuji TV) in 2014.
He is a Grand Master (Dai-shihan) of the Tozan-ryū Shakuhachi Association, a member of Hōgaku Onshinkai, a member of the Japan Sankyoku Association, a member of "Shakuhachi Hekishin Juku"; a graduate of the NHK Hōgaku Skills Training Association and graduated from the Faculty of Engineering, Yamagata University.
