Shakuhachi

Born in 1960, Yamazaki Hokuzan studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Yamazaki Hokuzan II (his father) and Ikeda Seizan II, and classical honkyoku under Iso Genjō ( from Itchoken temple in Hakata).
He received the Kitakyushu Citizens' Cultural Encouragement Award in 1991.
Since 2001, he has played the shakuhachi for the Tsugaru shamisen band "Yoshida Brothers," and has participated in national tours, overseas performances, and recordings both in Japan and overseas.
He won the Tozan-ryū Shakuhachi Honkyoku Competition National Tournament twice (2005 and 2007), and received the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award, Gold Award, Head of School Cup, and Sankei Shimbun Cup in both competitions.
Received the Kitakyushu Citizens' Cultural Award in 2006.
In 2020, he assumed the name Yamazaki Hokuzan III.
Currently, he is a Tozan-ryū Chikurinken Grand Master (Dai-shihan), a Tozan-ryū lecturer and examiner, and a lifetime member of the Tozan-ryū Shakuhachi Association. He is the president of Chikuku-sha.
He resides in Kitakyushu City, is a member of the Japan Musicians Union, and is a lecturer at the Asahi Culture Center Kitakyushu.
